Legendary singer and song writer, Tommy Sands joins PITF as Affiliate Artist
Tommy Sands, County Down’s singer, songwriter and social activist, has achieved something akin to legendary status in his own lifetime. From the pioneering tours with the highly influential Sands Family, playing Carnegie Hall to Moscow’s Olympic Stadium, he has become one of Ireland’s most powerful songwriters and enchanting performers. He enjoys celebrity status in many parts of the world, tempered by artistic integrity and the sorrow of personal tragedy in his war torn homeland.
Walking the road between two cultures, he dreams of an Ireland without conflict. Indeed, his songs speak to all that Ireland is, from its troubled past to its indomitable spirit and a vision of “a land of dreaming”. And his work around the globe speaks to our common heritage, using music to bridge cultural differences. In this way he shares a vision with songwriters instigating social change such as Phil Ochs, Joan Baez, and close friend Pete Seeger.
“There is a Heart of Harmony we are all longing to tune into. It’s the direct experience of remembering, with great relief, who we really are. The words suggest a path. The music takes us there.”
Jan Garrett and JD Martin are multi award winning singer songwriters who live and create their music in the mountains of Colorado near Aspen. Before they met in 1995 they each had long and illustrious solo musical careers. Now it is their delight to combine their talents in writing, recording and performing their original music to audiences around the country and beyond. Their music is describes as “rich and intelligent, a velvet-hammer wake-up call, as satisfying to the soul as it is to the ear”. Jan and JD are powerful presenters who teach with a twinkle and inspire by example.
JD Martin is an acclaimed songwriter of 5 Number One and 10 Top Ten country and pop hit singles. His songs have been recorded by such luminaries as Reba McEntire, Terri Clark, B.J. Thomas, Peter Cetera (from the band Chicago), and the Oak Ridge Boys. He has won over 15 ASCAP awards for excellence in songwriting in Nashville and LA.
Jan Garrett is a jazz singer, masterful teacher, poet, wilderness vision quester, long-time meditation student, and (yes) certified laughing instructor who has toured with John Denver, Steve Martin and the Dirt Band, and has appeared on the Tonight Show and in Rolling Stone. The mother of identical twin daughters, she believes that “the chance of a lifetime is to be yourself”.
